Background of the Study :
Youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge in Nigeria, driven by rapid population growth, skill mismatches, and inadequate job creation. Economic policies have been implemented to stimulate employment, yet their effectiveness in reducing youth unemployment is often questioned. In Kano State, a region with a large youth population, government interventions have focused on promoting entrepreneurship, vocational training, and industrial development (Sani, 2023). Despite these initiatives, youth unemployment rates remain high, suggesting that policy measures may not fully address the underlying structural issues. This study investigates the effect of economic policies on youth unemployment in Kano State, analyzing policy frameworks, employment statistics, and socio-economic conditions. By evaluating both quantitative data and qualitative insights from stakeholders, the research seeks to determine how economic policies influence job creation and skill development among the youth, and to identify policy gaps that need to be addressed to reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth (Abubakar, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although various economic policies have been enacted to reduce youth unemployment in Kano State, the results have been suboptimal. High rates of joblessness persist due to factors such as skill mismatches, inadequate support for entrepreneurship, and insufficient investment in youth-oriented sectors. The disconnect between policy intentions and labor market realities raises concerns about the efficacy of current strategies. This study aims to examine the factors contributing to sustained youth unemployment and assess the impact of economic policies on generating employment opportunities in Kano State (Sani, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of economic policies on youth unemployment.
To identify key factors hindering job creation among the youth.
To propose policy recommendations for reducing youth unemployment.
Research Questions:
How do economic policies affect youth unemployment in Kano State?
What factors contribute to high youth unemployment rates?
What policy interventions can effectively reduce youth joblessness?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Economic policies have a significant impact on youth unemployment.
H2: Inadequate skill development programs exacerbate youth unemployment.
H3: Targeted policy reforms can reduce youth unemployment rates.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the relationship between economic policies and youth unemployment in Kano State. The findings will assist policymakers in designing targeted interventions to improve job creation and skill development, thereby reducing unemployment among the youth. Addressing these issues is crucial for sustainable economic growth and social stability (Abubakar, 2024).
